Making Place-Based Research FAIR

Taking its name from the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), the FAIR Station Initiative is a collaboration to develop a next-generation, open-source reservation and research-tracking platform that connects field-based scientific research activities to their outputs.

Our goal is to streamline how fieldwork is tracked and connect the people, places, projects, and outputs that make up the research lifecycle.

Empowering Shared Practices

Reserving time at a field station is a universal touchpoint across place-based research. Today, that moment is largely administrative, but it could also be where shared practices around data, metadata, and stewardship begin. The question we are asking is simple: What becomes possible when this layer of the research lifecycle is open and connected? To answer this question, we will test and learn.

Test

Using UC Nature’s Reservation Application Management System (RAMS) we are testing ways to collect persistent identifiers and structured metadata through existing project and visit workflows. This allows us to learn how researchers engage with these requests, what information they are willing to provide, and where the process may create additional burden.

Building on research and discussions already led by the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) and others in the field station and marine laboratory community, we are embarking on discovery research outside the UC Nature system to learn more about the tools they use, the information they collect, and where better connections could be useful.
